In 2018, a cover for Astrid Scholte’s Four Dead Queens marked the beginning of something I couldn’t have predicted. Eight years and one hundred book covers later, that single commission has grown into a body of work spanning multiple genres, languages, and continents — a portfolio that has helped define what 3D typographic cover art looks like in contemporary publishing.
This collection represents a full arc: from that first cover to the most recent, Jordan Stephanie Gray’s Devoured. Between those two bookends sit 100 unique artworks for titles across YA Fantasy, Romance, Dark Romance, Mystery & Thriller, Paranormal, Dystopian Fiction, and beyond. Each cover is built from the ground up using 3D modelling, digital sculpting, and hand-crafted typographic illustration — an approach rooted in Baroque and Rococo ornamentation but executed with modern digital tools.
What ties these covers together is not genre but philosophy: the belief that a title isn’t just text placed on an image — it is architecture. Every letter is sculpted, every flourish deliberate. Typography becomes the cover’s protagonist, as dimensional and expressive as the characters it represents. Gold-leafed serifs twist around serpents. Neon-lit letters shatter through darkness. Crystal formations spell out names that shimmer with hidden meaning. The craft is the concept. These have all been categorised alphabetically & as best as possible by series. Enjoy.
The Work Behind the Work
Each cover in this collection began as a conversation with an author or publisher and ended as a three-dimensional world. The process involves a deep understanding of of the brief, conceptual sketching, 3D type construction, scene building, lighting design, rendering and retouching. A single cover can take weeks and months to complete. There are no shortcuts, no template swaps — every piece is bespoke.
The studio’s signature lies in the tension between the ornate and the modern. Baroque grandeur meets digital precision. Decorative excess is restrained by narrative purpose. The result is cover art that commands attention on a bookshelf, translates beautifully to digital thumbnails, and rewards closer inspection with layers of symbolic detail.
Notable Titles & Achievements
This portfolio includes covers for books that have collectively sold millions of copies worldwide.
The Inheritance Games series (above) by Jennifer Lynn Barnes — a franchise of over 6 million copies sold — has become one of the studio’s most iconic projects, with covers spanning the original trilogy, spin-offs, exclusive retailer editions, and international releases.
The Final Gambit won the 2022 Goodreads Choice Award for Best Young Adult Fiction.
Other covers in this collection have graced New York Times bestsellers including Shelby Mahurin’s Serpent & Dove (debuted at #2 on the NYT list), Chloe Gong’s Our Violent Ends (instant #1 NYT bestseller), and Dhonielle Clayton’s The Belles trilogy (NYT bestseller, Kirkus Best Books of 2018, Carnegie Medal nominee, 2019 Lodestar Award nominee). Brigid Kemmerer’s Forging Silver into Stars marked her fifth consecutive NYT bestseller, while Astrid Scholte’s Four Dead Queens was shortlisted for the CBCA Book of the Year and became an international bestseller.
From 1 to 100: The Creative Evolution
Looking at these 100 covers chronologically reveals a clear creative evolution.
The earlier works — Four Dead Queens, Serpent & Dove, Ever Cursed — established the foundational vocabulary: ornate 3D type, rich colour palettes, and a strong sense of material realism.
As the portfolio grew, so did the range. The neon-drenched Cold Case Academy German editions pushed into graphic, pop-art territory. The Liarland and Liar Go Round covers by Madison Rupp introduced carnival-lit chaos. The Murder, She Wrote series for Stephanie Kuehn explored ethereal, ghostly translucency.
By the time the studio reached the Naturals series re-covers, The Grandest Game, and Warrior Princess Assassin, the craft had matured into something unmistakable: a visual language where every every ornament tells a story, every letter a character and the boundary between illustration and typography has dissolved entirely.
